Most people are aware of the color of most semen. However, there can be variations in color that effect the look of perfectly fertile semen. We’ll explain what these color variations mean and which ones require a visit to your doctor. First, you should understand what semen is composed of and how semen and sperm relate to each other.
What is Seminal Fluid or Semen?
Seminal fluid, or semen, is a viscous fluid released from the male reproductive system during ejaculation. It’s composed of fluids from the prostate, seminal vesicles, and bulbourethral glands. Seminal fluid is also the carrier of sperm cells.
Semen’s purpose is to help the sperm reach the egg for fertilization. The fluid provides support, protection, and energy for the sperm cells and helps them move through the female reproductive system.
Does Clear Sperm Mean Infertility?
Clear sperm does not indicate infertility. There are several colors of healthy semen and sperm, including clear, white or slightly grayish. Semen is composed of several enzymes that are, in turn, composed of a number of proteins, minerals and hormones. The prostate gland is the origin of semen’s components, and the male’s diet plays a part in the color of semen. Semen is mainly made up of the following:
- Calcium
- Citric Acid
- Fibrinolysin
- Phosphates
- Potassium
- Proteins
- Sodium
- Zinc
The different color variations can indicate issues and infections. Here are some of the illnesses indicated by the color of semen.
Yellowish or Greenish Semen
Tinges of yellow or green in the semen every time you ejaculate can be an indication of a urinary tract infection, jaundice, leukocytospermia, or a prostate infection.
Pink, Orange, Reddish-brown or Red Semen
Semen of these colors usually indicates the presence of blood, or hematospermia. Untreated high blood pressure can cause sperm to be mixed with blood. Other causes can be STDs, prostate infections, rough sex or masturbation, and testicular, urethral or prostate cancer.
Black semen can be caused by dried blood, spinal cord injuries, and the presence of heavy metals in the body, including lead, manganese and nickel. People should see a doctor if the abnormal color persists for more than two days. However, starting a program of IVF includes testing the sperm and semen for any problems. Before beginning an IVF/ICSI program, both the male and female should undergo a fertility test for couples. This testing will help determine when the female is ovulating and will reveal any problems with the semen and sperm in males due to abnormal color or other symptoms. An IVF/ICSI program is an assisted fertility program. The initials stand for In vitro fertilization (IVF), which covers the entire fertilization process, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which is a procedure of the IVF process. IVF was developed to help couples who had both viable sperm and a healthy uterus to conceive. The ICSI procedure was developed to further enhance these couples’ chances of conception. The procedures of IVF have been expanded to enable women and couples to conceive with the help of a sperm donor.
