AI Embryo Selection for Higher ICSI Success

iDAScore: AI Embryo Selection for Higher ICSI Success

Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology has played an important role in many areas of medicine, particularly in the field of Reproductive Medicine, which focuses on helping couples experiencing infertility. One of the important processes used to treat infertility is IVF, including both IVF and ICSI, which require the selection of the highest-quality embryos to help increase the chance of pregnancy and successful embryo implantation in the uterus.

iDAScore technology is one of the AI innovations that helps improve the accuracy of embryo grading. The system automatically analyzes the development of embryos and assigns scores based on their completeness, helping doctors select embryos with the highest potential for pregnancy.

Steps in the iDAScore AI Technology for Embryo Selection

Step 1: Recording Embryo Development

The embryos are cultured in a Time-Lapse Embryoscope system, with continuous recording of images showing changes and development without having to remove the embryos from the incubator.

Step 2: AI Analysis of Embryo Images

The iDAScore system uses Time-Lapse image data and analyzes it with AI to evaluate the developmental patterns of the embryos at each time point.

Step 3: Evaluating Embryo Potential

The system analyzes embryo growth data and characteristics to systematically assess the potential of each embryo.

Step 4: Calculating the iDAScore

AI processes all the data and generates an iDAScore to compare and rank embryos according to their assessed potential.

Step 5: Supporting Doctors and Embryologists in Embryo Selection

The iDAScore results are used as supporting information when considering and selecting an appropriate embryo for transfer back into the uterine cavity.

EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI and Continuous Analysis of Embryo Development

EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI helps continuously monitor and analyze embryo growth through the Time-Lapse system, allowing detailed data on changes in the embryo at each stage to be collected. This information is then used to assess the potential of the embryos and support the embryo selection process.

EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI Supports Embryo Selection

When there are multiple embryos with similar characteristics, EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI can help analyze embryo development data and rank the embryos according to their assessed potential. This provides doctors and embryologists with additional information to support their consideration when selecting the most appropriate embryo.

EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI and Embryo Transfer Planning

Data from EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI can be used as supporting information when planning the selection of an embryo for transfer back into the uterine cavity, particularly when there are multiple embryos. This allows the team of specialists to incorporate information on embryo development into the treatment planning appropriately for each couple.

EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI Works Together with Specialists

EmbryoScope + iDAScore AI technology serves as a tool to help analyze data on embryo development. The analysis results are considered together with the assessments of embryologists and doctors to comprehensively evaluate the quality and potential of the embryos before planning an embryo transfer that is appropriate for each individual patient.

What Is iDAScore Technology?

iDAScore is an artificial intelligence system specifically developed to help grade embryos efficiently and accurately. It uses image analysis from the Time-Lapse Embryoscope system, an advanced tool with the special capability of continuously capturing images of embryos at every point in time, 24 hours a day, without the need to remove the embryos from the appropriate environment inside the incubator.

The special feature of the Time-Lapse Embryoscope system is its ability to record detailed images of embryo development every 10–15 minutes. This allows us to observe even small changes in the embryos completely and accurately, providing useful information for evaluating embryo quality. These images are then analyzed by the iDAScore AI system to assign scores and rank embryos with the highest potential for implantation and development into a fully developed baby.

How iDAScore Works

When the iDAScore system receives data from continuous embryo imaging, it processes all images through an AI algorithm trained using a database of hundreds of thousands of embryos from around the world, allowing it to accurately analyze embryo quality by considering the following key factors:

  • Cell Division Rate
Embryos with a cell division rate that corresponds to the expected cell division milestones have a higher potential for implantation and a higher rate of normal chromosomes. The AI system evaluates the rate of cell division from 2 cells to 4 cells and 8 cells, respectively, through to the Blastocyst stage, in order to calculate the embryo’s developmental score.
  • Cell Shape at Each Stage
AI technology examines the shape and size of the cells, including the balance of their arrangement. If an embryo has abnormal cell shapes, such as asymmetrical cell division, Fragmentation, or small pieces of cells that have broken away, as well as abnormalities in cell shape, the system will assign a lower score than an embryo with a complete structure because these factors can all affect the chance of implantation.
  • Cell Movement Within the Embryo
Cell movement reflects the viability and energy within the embryo. The AI system analyzes these movements to detect abnormalities at an early stage, which may affect the embryo’s ability to implant in the uterine cavity.

After analyzing all three factors, iDAScore assigns the embryo a numerical score. A higher score indicates an embryo with good quality and greater potential for implantation and pregnancy.

Benefits and Effectiveness of iDAScore in the ICSI Process

The use of iDAScore in the IVF process provides several benefits and
efficiencies over traditional evaluation methods, as follows:

  • Increased Accuracy in Embryo Selection
AI-based evaluation can help reduce discrepancies from human visual assessment, which may vary depending on the experience of the embryologist. In contrast, the iDAScore system uses the same standard worldwide, providing stable and reliable evaluation results.
  • Reduced Risk of Unsuccessful Pregnancy
With the ability to select only embryos with high quality and implantation potential, it can effectively reduce the chance of unsuccessful embryo implantation or early miscarriage
  • Increased Success Rate of ICSI
In addition, several studies have reported that using iDAScore together with the Embryoscope system, a special embryo culture incubator using Time-Lapse technology, can help increase pregnancy success rates by more than 10–20% compared with traditional embryo selection methods.

Embryo quality grading and selection is one of the most important steps in the IVF process that should not be overlooked. At VFC Center, Fertility Technology Center (V-Fertility Center), we use advanced iDAScore technology for embryo selection to increase the chance of successful pregnancy and help make your IVF treatment more successful.

FAQs

How Is iDAScore Different from Traditional Embryo Assessment?

Traditional embryo scoring relies on visual assessment by embryologists, which may vary depending on their experience. In contrast, iDAScore works together with an AI system to analyze continuous images of embryos, providing more accurate and standardized results worldwide.

The two technologies have different purposes. iDAScore helps assess embryo development and potential based on Time-Lapse images, while PGT examines the integrity of the embryo’s chromosomes at the genetic level. Using both together can further improve the accuracy of selecting healthy embryos and reduce the risk of miscarriage or genetic abnormalities.

iDAScore is suitable for all patients undergoing ICSI treatment for infertility, especially those who have multiple embryos and want the highest possible confidence in embryo selection. However, the doctor will determine whether it is appropriate based on each patient’s individual condition. You can consult with a doctor at VFC Center for advice on whether this technology is suitable for your situation.

Using AI technology such as iDAScore for embryo selection can significantly increase the embryo implantation rate and pregnancy success rate because the system can select embryos with the highest quality and potential more accurately than traditional assessment methods. This helps reduce the risk of failed pregnancy and miscarriage.
